Nevada Opera's Studio Program
Youth Program
| The Spring, 2013 program is currently underway. The program began January 7th and will culminate with a performance in June, En Harmony II. For information on the program, click here. |
The Youth Program is designed to create professional opportunities and enhance the skills of young performers with early dreams of becoming professional performers. The program creates opportunities for young performers to learn roles in musicals and operas written specifically for performers between the ages of 9 and 18. It creates a professional atmosphere to hone their skills and a safe environment for them to pursue their musical future. It runs on a professional model and all young performers are expected to advance in their musical, performing and collaborative skills with the final production being in alignment with professionally acceptable productions world-wide.
The program is an educational program with individual and group vocal, acting and dramatic training and opportunities and requires a small fee of $200 per child per session. We are seeking funds to provide scholarships for at-risk and economically-disadvantaged youth, so that children with interest and ability can participate in this program, no matter their financial situation. This program is expected to be financially self-sustaining in the first year through tuition and ticket sales. There are scholarships available for qualifying children, as Nevada Opera supports local talent at all cost.
Linda Saxton is the Director of the Nevada Opera Youth Program. She brings more than 35 years of musical experience to what promises to be an exciting time in our city’s performance culture. The program, begun with the Fall, 2012 session, provides an opportunity for students to receive vocal, performance, dance, and dramatic training. Students in the fall program were cast in Nevada Opera’s production of Sweeney Todd; 18 students participated in The Best Christmas Pagent Ever.

Nevada Opera’sArtist Development Programs are crucial to NOA's success; They help artists develop and enhance their skills, provide a broader appeal for audiences and support, enhance the production quality and provide services to the community. Artist programs have a variety of styles; ours creates a community of music makers. Typically everything is double cast meaning that EVERYONE gets solo work.
There are two tracks:
-
Youth Program for kids, tweens and teens
Nevada Opera’s Youth Program is designed to create professional opportunities and enhance the skills of young performers with early dreams of becoming professional performers.
- Resident Artist Program for professional opera singers
A program to help launch the careers of young artists from Reno, the nation and even world-wide by offering them professional opportunities to learn major roles as well as contemporary roles
Nevada Opera Studio Program
Resident Artist Program
We are bringing back The Studio, the award-willing program developed and run by Kathleen Kimmel until 2004. This highly successful Resident Artist program helped launch the careers of many young Reno artists. The program will offer local singers professional opportunities to learn leading roles in both traditional and contemporary operas. In addition, young artists from all over the world will be invited to Reno to network and sing, providing our local artists with access to their peers in other cities.
For Artown 2012 performances, Nevada Opera featured a number of local artists as well as a dozen visiting singers and pianists hailing from New York to Kyrgyzstan. Under Monica’s direction, Kathy Kimmel and Jon Fay, both veterans for Nevada Opera, return to run this program. We will also expand our presence in the community and build new audiences with our Opera Show Chorus that will perform in smaller theatres and restaurants. This program will generate revenue through paid performances at restaurants and special events.
