Satire...Love...Self-Execution (very difficult to do...)

The Mikado

Conducted by Michael Borowitz

Performed at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts

Our season wraps up with The Mikado (sung in English with English supertitles) on April 11 and 13, 2008.  This rollicking Gilbert and Sullivan is among the funniest operettas ever.  Its elegant score and hilarious plot (the Lord High Executioner must decapitate himself unless he can find a substitute) have made it hugely popular all over the globe.  The original version made fun of Victorian England and its craze for anything Japanese.  Nevada Opera will offer all its beloved music and impeccable text amid present-day references to Reno, politicians (don't forget - it will be an election year), and hot topics -- imagine "Titipu" as a new housing development here in the Truckee Meadows.  The Mikado will be tuneful entertainment for all.  Matthew Lau (hilarious as Don Magnifico in Cenerentola 2007) returns as the title character and Julie Wright Costa does double duty as Katisha, the daughter-in-law-elect and our stage director.
