Triumph...Love...War

Conducted by Michael Borowitz
Performed at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts
The grandest of all operas, Verdi's Aïda (sung in Italian with English supertitles) will be performed on October 12 and 14, 2007. Aïda is torn between her love for Radames and her obligations to her father and her country. Radames must choose between his love for Aïda and his duty as a soldier; the Princess Amneris passes from moods of ardent love, in which no sacrifice seems too great, to moods of jealousy, in which everything seems permissible. This is grand opera at its grandest. Not staged by Nevada Opera for 18 years, this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity!
One of the most popular of all operas, Aïda combines the spectacular and exotic features of grand opera with the orchestral virtuosity of Verdi's later style and, especially in the third act, his vivid delineation of personal relationships. Hope Briggs makes her Nevada Opera debut as Aïda with Gwendolyn Jones (Carmen 2002) as her rival Ameneris. Drew Slatton (Tosca 2006, Carmen 2002) portrays Radames, the love interest of both ladies.
